How to Get Your Car Ready for a Long Road Trip With These Simple Repairs

pre road trip car maintenance checklist

Road trips are one of the best ways to explore the country. Open highways, great music, snacks in the passenger seat, and a destination waiting at the end. But before you load the trunk and hit the road, there’s one thing many drivers forget.

Your car needs to be ready for the trip too.

I’m Steve, and after years working as a mechanic I can tell you something with confidence. Most breakdowns I see could have been avoided with a simple pre road trip car maintenance checklist.

Every year at Kingdom Autocare, we see people come in after their vacation plans were interrupted by something small like a dead battery, worn tires, or low coolant.

The good news is that most of these problems are easy to catch before you leave.

Let’s go through the simple checks and repairs that will help keep your road trip smooth and stress free. ✔️

Start With A Quick Walk Around Inspection

Before opening the hood, I always tell people to start with a simple walk around of the vehicle.

You’d be surprised how often drivers miss obvious issues.

Take a minute to look for:

  • Fluid leaks under the car
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Cracks in the windshield
  • Broken or dim lights
  • Anything hanging loose under the vehicle

A while back a customer from Peoria stopped by Kingdom Autocare before heading to Wisconsin. During a quick walk around I noticed a nail sticking out of the rear tire.

He had no idea it was there.

That tiny nail would have turned into a flat tire halfway through the trip. Instead we patched it in 15 minutes and he was on the road.

Sometimes the simplest checks prevent the biggest headaches.

Check Your Engine Oil And Other Fluids

Fluids are the lifeblood of your car. If they are low or dirty, long highway drives can quickly turn into expensive repairs.

Your pre road trip car maintenance checklist should always include checking:

Engine Oil

Pull the dipstick and make sure the oil level sits between the minimum and maximum marks. If the oil looks very dark or gritty, it may be time for a change.

If you’re close to your next oil change, it’s smart to do it before the trip.

Coolant

Coolant keeps your engine from overheating. Low coolant levels can cause major engine damage, especially during summer travel.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid should stay near the full line and appear clear. If it’s dark or low, have it checked.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission repairs are expensive. Making sure the fluid is clean and at the correct level helps prevent overheating on long drives.

Windshield Washer Fluid

This one is simple but often forgotten. Bugs, dust, and road grime can quickly cover your windshield on long highway drives.

A customer from East Peoria came in last summer before driving to Florida. His washer fluid reservoir was completely empty.

Halfway through the trip he would have been fighting bug splatter the entire time. A quick refill saved him a lot of frustration.

Inspect Your Tires Carefully

Tires are one of the most important parts of road trip safety.

Your tires are the only part of your car that actually touches the road. If they fail, the rest of the vehicle doesn’t matter.

Here’s what to check.

Tire Pressure

Check pressure when the tires are cold. Underinflated tires wear faster, reduce fuel economy, and can overheat during long highway drives.

Tread Depth

A simple trick I often recommend is the penny test. Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head down. If you can see the top of his head, the tread is too low.

Tire Damage

Look for:

  • Cracks
  • Bulges
  • Nails
  • Uneven wear patterns

And don’t forget the spare tire.

One driver from Pekin learned that lesson the hard way. He had a flat tire on the way to St. Louis and discovered his spare had no air.

When he came into Kingdom Autocare later he said, “Steve, I didn’t even think about the spare.”

Now he checks it before every trip. ✔️

Test Your Battery Before Leaving

Dead batteries love to appear at the worst possible moment.

They’re especially common when a battery is older than three to five years.

Warning signs include:

  • Slow engine cranking
  • Dim headlights
  • Clicking sounds when starting

At Kingdom Autocare we can test your battery in minutes.

A family from Peoria once came in for a routine road trip check. Their battery looked fine, but when we tested it the voltage dropped immediately.

If they had started their trip the next morning, they might have been stuck in a hotel parking lot with a dead battery.

Instead we replaced it that afternoon and their vacation started smoothly.

Inspect Your Brakes Before A Long Drive

Brakes are one thing you never want to gamble with.

If you notice any of these signs, it’s time for a brake inspection:

  • Squealing noises
  • Grinding sounds
  • Vibration while braking
  • Longer stopping distances

Highway driving means higher speeds, which makes reliable brakes even more important.

A driver from East Peoria once came in before a family road trip because he heard a light squeaking sound. When we checked the brakes, the pads were nearly gone.

If he had driven another few hundred miles, the rotors could have been damaged too.

Catching it early saved him a lot of money and stress.

Check Belts And Hoses Under The Hood

Belts and hoses don’t get much attention, but when they fail they can shut down your car instantly.

Look for:

  • Cracked rubber
  • Frayed belts
  • Coolant residue near hoses
  • Soft or brittle rubber

These components naturally wear out over time. If they look questionable, replacing them before a trip is often the safest choice.

I’ve seen road trips cut short because of a $20 hose that burst on the highway.

Replace Worn Windshield Wipers

This is one of the cheapest repairs on your entire car.

But it makes a huge difference when driving through rain.

If your wipers:

  • Leave streaks
  • Skip across the glass
  • Make squeaking noises

It’s time to replace them.

One customer from Pekin told me he never realized how bad his wipers were until he replaced them before a Chicago road trip.

Then he drove through a thunderstorm and said it made all the difference.

Test All Exterior Lights

Lights are a simple but critical part of your safety.

Check:

  • Headlights
  • Brake lights
  • Turn signals
  • Hazard lights
  • Reverse lights

This takes about two minutes and helps ensure other drivers can see you clearly.

At Kingdom Autocare we often catch burned out bulbs during road trip inspections.

Pack A Simple Emergency Kit

Even with perfect maintenance, unexpected things can happen.

A good emergency kit should include:

  • Jumper cables
  • Flashlight
  • Tire inflator or repair kit
  • First aid supplies
  • Phone charger
  • Bottled water
  • Basic tools

These small items can make a big difference if you run into trouble on the road.

Take A Short Test Drive Before You Leave

After finishing your pre road trip car maintenance checklist, take the car for a quick drive.

Pay attention to:

  • Unusual vibrations
  • New noises
  • Warning lights
  • Steering behavior

If anything feels off, it’s better to address it before the trip instead of halfway through it.
